Talking p0303 cyl 3 misfire, yes i searched and changed the plugs and did a compression test

hi,

new here and new to dodge in general. got a killer deal on '03 1500 4.7l with 28k on the odometer.

started hesitating and throwing the code at speed not idle.

already changed plugs and rotated coils to see if the code moved, it did not.

did compression test and all cylinders are normal (170 - 180) cylinder 3 actually was at 180...

i will be doing a leak down test on the cylinder this afternoon, but wanted to get this out there for suggestions.... based on the comp test i don't think bad valves or head gasket but the leak down should confirm...

any other suggestions?

many thanks folks!

When I did my SRT coil pack conversion I was getting p0301, p0303 and p0305 which are cylinders 1-3-5. These were brand new coils and plugs werent even 1 month of two old. The truck ran fine so I would clear then and eventually they would come back.

So when I did m cam swap I made sure I swapped coild from 1-3-5 with 2-4-6. Wanna know te results? No more codes. So it couldnt be the coils or the would have done the same on 2-4-6. It obviously was not the plugs. So either the wiring wasnt connected good or maybe not good contacts on plugs.

thanks for the welcome dirtydog

yes, i did search, i apologize i did not included that comment in the body of the post, just the title.

after a leak-down test everything is a - ok... the cylinder in question only leaked 5% the rest were around 10% - 20%.

weedahoe... thanks for the suggestion on the coils, i did not switch sides, just moved the coils one over on each side. so, same coils same side just different cylinders. and the misfire did not move with the coil.

so i guess that leaves either the coil wire??? or the injector???

how can i test the injector? fuel pressure test? already ran seafoam and a tank of fuel injector cleaner.

also, the plug was dry carbon fouled... new plug has some tanning with 150 miles on it, but no carbon.

can you guys think of anything else?

thx, joe

After I swapped mine I no longer got any codes so that leads me to believe it was the electrical connection to the coil itself ot the way the coil boot was sitting on top of the plugs. I had never had any codes before changing my coils and then right after I started getting those codes I listed earlier. I waited to do anything about because i knew I was going to tear it all back apart soon. This weekend I will be taking it apart again to shorten my electrical wires

thanks weedahoe,

my case might be different, it started to throw the cylinder 3 code and then i changed plugs and moved coils. still have the code after about 150 miles, so i then did the compression and leak down test. the cylinder is fine. so it must be either the wire or injector as far as i can tell... i did not want to throw parts at it hoping for a bullseye. but with the good cylinder and dry carbon fouled plug it must be fuel related??? fuel and injectors are not my strong suit.

thanks again!!!
