Default Will Air Temp Sensor Cause Check Engine Light?

I was just wondering if a broken Air Temp Sensor would cause the check engine light to come on? Mine is broken but the nipple or sensor is still there.. There is just a like plastic cage that goes around it that is broken off. My check engine light is not on but since it has gotten colder my mpg has went down a lot and the truck feels kinda doggish sometimes. I do have the K&N CAI installed and I have heard this is not good to run in cold weather?? Well either way I can't put my stock intake back on... whoops..
