08 Dodge RAM 1500, what would you recommend: mopar oem remote start or Viper 5901?

I have the Mopar starter, and I have had no issues with it.

Yeah, I heard something about that. And that because you had to put a key somewhere in the truck, it would disable the engine immobilizer (which would stop the vast majority of car thieves, except that you have to get it towed back to the dealer to have the computer reset, if the immobilizer is tripped).

Installing an aftermarket alarm/starter of any brand will NOT VOID any manufacturers warranty unless the unit itself fails and causes problems. That only happens with an installer that doesn't know what their doing.
All the dealers I ever worked at sub'd out remote starter installs to stereo shops and billed through the MSRP.

I would opt for ANY aftermarket combo over factory unit. Factory is overpriced and the range blows. For the price of a factory starter, I got a 2-way paging, 1 mile range remote start/alarm combo unit. Got rid of the oversized keylocl/unlock fobb too buy cutting a palin chipped key and using the aftermarket fobb. Controls factory alarm as well as aftermarket alarm and remote start.

I had the Viper 5900 (precursor to the 5901) in my Dakota and I now have the Python equivalent of it (Both brands are made by DEI and offer basically the same alarms) as the Viper was damaged when melted snow got in the alarm brain after my rollover. I love the alarm and I'd highly recommend it, just get it installed by a reputable installer who does good work. I don't know if you guys have the seperate fobs for keyless from the factory or if it's built onto the key like mine was but I went to the dealer and had them cut me a regular key without the built-in fob for under $10. The range is great and there's a bunch of settings you can have them configure at the time it's installed (whether it will automatically arm after a certain amount of time, how long it will stay running with the remote start, etc). I even got the Python put in for $150 because the Viper got damaged (they told me $150 either the Viper would be repaired or I'd get a new alarm brain installed, very good deal for the price of these things).

Personally I would choose the Viper.

Well, since i have a 2-way paging fobb, i didn't see the reason or the want to carry around a huge bulky key that has lock/unlock features.
I just bought a plain key that is chipped. had it cut for a $1 and programed it.
Here is what i bought. u can get plain keys with no logos for like $18. i didn't get from this seller, but it's exactly what i have. Now, no super long bulky key that is akward in my pocket and especially bulky with an added aftermarket fobb. To carry around both is silly IMO.

Stock key will lock/unlock the doors still along with the aftermarket fobb and it will arm the alarm. Just no remote start button and no diagnostics like my 2-way pager.
Hope this is what you were looking for Rubber???

I have my stock key that has the lock/unlock buttons in a series of 3 ziplock baggies along with a dessicant bag which is hidden under my truck and ziptied. Although, my remote start/alarm combo has Telematics so i can lock/unlock my truck from anywhere in the country by just a phone call. I like a back-up plan for a back-up...lol
