Default Steering is stiff for first minute or so...

On my 2004 1500 4x4, when I first get in the truck, the steering is very stiff. It doesn't matter if I remote start it and let it warm up or if I jump in and start it, the steering is stiff until I turn the wheel back and forth a couple times. This occurs when moving or sitting still and goes away after a couple turns.

The truck is basically stock and the only thing that's really changed is that the temperatures aren't getting out of the 30s these days. There's no noise from the pump and no damage that I can see to any components. Once it loosens up it's fine until the next time it sits for a while.

Any ideas where to look? Thanks.

Called morning sickness. It's likely internal wear and you'll prob need a new rack shortly.

Is this normal for a truck with only 65,000 miles?

Also, is there an upgrade available? Is there another vehicle's steering rack that would provide better performance / reliability? Maybe the 2wd 2500 or 3500 rack?

Even the 2wd? That really sucks. Draglink setup works great for a solid front axle but on a 2wd, there's no good reason not to use rack and pinion.
