Default 450-mile tow -- easy!

Well, it was time for me to take my Subaru Legacy to Raleigh, NC, for a complete engine build. That's 450 miles each way for me.

The trailer is 2100 lbs and the car is 3400. After installing a trailer brake controller, it turned out the trailer I was borrowing didn't even have brakes so I rented one instead. At least I could tow it one way and return rather than dragging the empty trailer home.

This was 90% interstate and I had zero issues whatsoever. I could choose what gear I needed by throttle position and engine sound. This is an 03 so I don't have tow mode but I didn't need it. From a dead stop you could tell there was another 5500 lbs back there but once cruising it had no problems accelerating or holding a grade. It was also my first chance to use the tow mirrors since all I usually tow is a small utility trailer.

Oh, and I got a solid 9 mpg cruising at ~ 75 mph.

The car is getting all forged internals and should be good for well over 400hp to the wheels on pump and nearly a hundred more on race gas or even better, E85

Lookin' good man. Damn 400+ HP in that little car will be a blast. What do you have done to it?

Stock it was turbo and AWD. I installed a larger turbo and while tuning it discovered that damage was done when the stock turbo blew. Now I've got low compression in one cylinder -- didn't even bother checking the others when I found it.

It's now getting Wiseco pistons and Eagle rods, along with a clutch & flywheel that can handle it all. All the mods are listed here. It's a really fun sleeper that should be capable of mid 11-sec timeslips very soon.

Man, those tow mirrors are definitely nice. I have them on my truck also, but haven't had a good reason to use them yet. Glad to hear all went well.
