A warm engine will help soften the grease and oil and make it easier to get off. Gunk makes a foamy engine cleaner that works excellent, I think it's called Engine Bright. Most of the electronics are well protected in modern vehicles, splash and spray shouldn't hurt, I would be a little more careful with a pressure washer though.
