anyone with neon on the exterior: How do neons work in the cold weather? I am having trouble finding the right kind of LEDs to make this project work. Thanks

LED's will be MUCH more durable than neon. Even though it will be tucked up under the bed rail it could see some impact and other forces. I would go with LED's

The LEDs will work better in the cold for sure...and a little more reliable I would think...only thing is that they are directional, less of a glow and more of a shine

Yea stay away from the neons. LED would be the way to go for sure. One side note, which may not affect you... if you have a bedliner and clamps for your cover on each side of the bed it might cause a problem when trying to mount the tubes. For example I have a soft tonneau with 3 clamps on each side which clamps to the underside of the bed rails. I don't have much room between the clamps and the sides of the bedliner neither. If you have this issue I would look into finding some flexible LED strips rather than tubes. Just a thought!

Great idea though I think this is something I need to do in the future!!

Thanks for the input, I will ditch the neon idea. Now I just need to find some good LEDs for cheap. I am having a hard time finding that combo! I'll post pics when its done. Thanks

Finally got these things in. I got the LEDs from a buddy that works at a large fire truck manufacturing facility that starts with a "P"

Lots of pics:
