Default Keys

I just bought a 2005 dodge ram and i love it but it only came with one key. Everywhere i look says its a transponder key but the one i have is just a solid silver key. Does any body know y this maybe. Did they make some without transponders?

If you take it to walmart to get a spare made they can tell if it has a chip or not, the chip would be inside the plastic part so you wouldnt ever see it

I just stripped the plastic part off the key. I like the thinner key anyways. Or you can take you vin to dealership and just ask, thats probably the easiest way.

It may be that it's an early '05 that didn't come with the chip. My '04 doesn't have a chip. I'm sure you could take it to any locksmith and he would be able to tell you whether it's chipped or not.

Brought my key to Lowes to get a spare cut incase the keys got locked in the truck and he put the key into a reader and knew that it was chipped. Because of this they would not cut a key.

My 05 isn't chipped...2 bucks a key at lowes/menards/wal mart/big r/farm and fleet...Worst case scenario...You get one cut and it does not work...if it trips your security system disconnect the batt cable and you're out 2 bucks...

Mine is an 04 and it came with chipped keys. When I tried to start it with the non-chipped key (I got an extra one made so I can start it on cold mornings with the chipped one and lock it from the outside with the non chipped one) it dies after 5 seconds.

hello i just bought 2002 RAM 1500 - truck comes with only one key and separate remote fob. I read the manual ind already know how to programm additional fob (get one from ebay) but im not sure about the key. Can i get just a valet key or it has to be transponder key? If transponder key - do i need 2 of them already programmed to add another one or 1 is enough (instructions are confusing) THNX for info
P.S. the key iv got is light gray

Glad my '03 doesn't have that. My Chrysler and Mazda spare keys cost $140 each. A keyless-entry fob can be added if you have one good fob. A security key requires two working keys to add one.
