$20 air filter and hose extender from pepboys works just as well as any 300 dollar CIA

Won't work on the 5.9, the throttle body is mounted in a completely different way with a much bigger mouth than the one on the 5.7.

Incorrect. A CIA that helps keep the air a little colder by enclosing the filter and sucking the air from outside the hot engine compartment, like a Volant, will work slightly better than any filter setup that pulls hot air from inside the engine bay.

However, I cannot argue with you on price.

I got my Volant for my 2001 on a 4th of July sale or something along those lines, at about $250.
