Unhappy Possible Cadillac Convertor problems

I have an engine light on and took it in to get diagnosed. The code that came up they said was P0420. They said that it could be the cadillac convertor, engine missfire, vacum leak, or engine leak into the exhaust. We have put so much money into fixing problems with this truck I am just trying to figure out if this sounds like something we can fix at home. The symptoms are that the truck feels sluggish and is running roughly. When I hit the gas it dosent pick up very well. And feels like its not getting enough gas. I would much appreciate any help.
Thanks
Susan

I would say that the converter is plugged also.

BTW I would say I don't think it's a he my friend. Don't know about you, but I don't know too many Susan's that are a he. Sounds like they don't want a performance gain, just a repair.

Thanks yall for responding so quick. And yep we are just looking to repair. If it is the cadillac converter than is that something that can be done fairly easy at home? Or is it very involved?

I have read that if the converter is plugged that can mean bigger problems. Is this so?

Not all the time, but yes a restricted exhaust will eventually hurt something.. Sometimes the CATALYTIC converter just breaks down into chunks. and plugs the exhaust. If you don't have any engine codes for an o2 sensor I would say it's just the converter. Sometimes when an o2 sensor goes bad it can send too much fuel in the motor. So when it comes out the exhaust unburned fuel can ruin the catalytic converter.

We're not being mean, but if you call it a cadillac converter instead of a catalytic converter lots of parts houses and or repair shops will see you and your wallet coming. Good luck Susan.

yes it can bring more problems. you need to get that GM part out of truck right soon and replace it with a nice free flowing catalytic converter. just a question but with the truck running have you looked under the truck to see if the cat was glowing red? if it is than you need to replace it now! just a friendly reminder everyone its catalytic! lol

also cats arent cheap and as cowboy said when they hear catalytic converter they see dollar signs. shop around and check with some of your local muffler shops. and i dont mean meinekee or however you spell it. dont go to a large chain shop if you understand what im saying. some smaller shops that have a good reputation can be much more affordable and easier to work with on price!
