Weird AC Problem - yeah, I know its winter :)
Hey all,
LIke the title says I got this strange AC problem happening where the fanbelt is actually grinding and burning on the ac pulley. Its happened to me twice in the last couple weeks and both times I was going up over a steep hill in traffic and its like the truck wouldn't gear down when I gave her a little goose with the gas pedal so I push harder and then she cuts in like a s.o.b. and when I get out to look I see smoke coming from the ac pulley where the belt touches it. The smell of burning rubber fills the cab too and its very bad - got to drive with the windows down in winter (brrrr) to get rid of it.
So I think the ac is the problem and I was gonna buy a shorter belt and bypass the ac for now until I get it fixed this spring. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?
Thanks Guys

Sounds like the compressor has frozen up. Haven't had a compressor freeze up in a while, my latest A/C failure was the opposite: the compressor clutch wouldn't engage on my Mazda.
Good luck - those things aren't cheap.

Why would the compressor stick and then run though? As I said it is an intermittent problem so far so if the compressor was seizing (freezing) up, wouldn't it stay that way? The last time it happened and I turned on the ac the clutch seemed to stutter for a few seconds before it engaged and then I drove home with the ac on and no problems.
