I just used a #14 awg. It's been fine for a few months now. A fine strand helps. Speaker wire would work better than 120V electrical wire.

is this OK for the wiring? I remember when you used to do this on mustangs and such it would overheat the wiring....guessing the Dodge bulbs are on individual relays?

I thought that I'd update this post. I really liked the idea, I just knew that there was something wrong about running a high amperage hot wire with no fuse under the hood of my truck. So, maybe some of you already figured this out, but:

The original mod was to run the high amperage hot side of the parking light system to now also power the high amperage hot side of the fog light system. That is an extra amperage load on the parking light system. I found that dodge switches to ground for it's fog lights and parking lights. So, use the low amperage side of the relay system of the parking lights, (the ground side) run a new ground wire from the parking light relay to the ground on the low amperage side of the fog light relay. When you turn on your headlight switch on the dash, the parking light relay is grounded(low amperage side), that in turn connects the high amperage side of the relay, which truns on your parking lights. So, when that ground is made, it also grounds the low amperage side of the fog light relay, then turning on the fog lights which pull power from the original wiring provided by dodge.

Also, if you really want control of your fog lights, you connect a wire the ground leg of the fog light relay, run that wire to dash mounted switch that is wired to ground. Then you can have fog lights on or off when ever you want, regardless of headlight switch position or even if the key is in the ignition! Don't blame me when you go to your truck one morning and the battery is dead because you left your fog lights on all night

I hope this helps, and I hope you guys go easy on me. I signed up tonight because I just had to add to this post.

Bert

Just for the record, your picture is not loading for me...

And I've been running the original mod posted by BlackAcid (where is that guy now'days anyway) for the past 2 years, never had a single problem...

schnydz,

Please clarify your updated modification for me*** Do you make your suggested modification 'in-place-of' OR 'in-addition-to' the original wire (hot - side) hookup? I have been successfully using the original modification as rob[GL] also mentioned to you however if this is better and safer I'm all for it.
Thanks for your clarification and great modification.

Well, I can't help you with the pic. Ask someone in charge of the forum.

I am suggesting replacing the original version with mine. And it is only a suggestion. I'm also sure that many of you have used the original mod for years with no problem. However, when was the last time you really inspected that wire? Did you pull up the relays and inspect where the wire makes contact with the relay? Is the insulation of that wire hard and brittle? All I'm saying is that your parking light system is completely powering your fog lights in the original mod. If something happens to your fog lights to blow the fuse, it will take out the fuse to your parking lights, or worse over heat the 'jumper wire' and cause an electrical fire under your hood(worse case scenerio). If you jumper the grounds, only milliamps are flowing through that wire. Your fog lights are receiving power from the original power source dodge had intended. If something happens to your fog lights to blow a fuse, they blow the fog light fuse.

If anyone else has problems with the pic I can try to upload it again.

Thanks, Bert

The only thing I can think of to say is that I pulled the relays straight up and then rotated them over by tipping the top towards the back of the truck. I did not rotate them by tipping them left or right. Maybe that's the difference? Look real close at where the pins are located in the pic. I can try and look at the relays tomorrow and see what pin number they are. Good luck!

Yea i actually printed out the pics and took them out with me and was looking at them. Are you just wrapping the wire around the pins and shoving it down in there? Ive got the 3 big relays like youve got at the bottom right then I dont have the middle one of the smaller relays, like the one to the right of the relay Im trying to hook into for this to work. Just curious as to what that one is for? Anyway thanks I'll try again sometime.

If you look in the cover of the fuse box it will show where all the relays are
so you can pull the right one.
