It almost sounds like you have a vacuum leak. I would start by checking all the vacuum lines.

So did you even do the compression check?

Vacuum leak will cause high idle and the ECM will correct it to the proper RPM (with in its limits)

Years ago a SBC I had with 200k+ miles on it skipped a tooth on the timing chain and it barely ran, sputtered, was hard to start, and I think because the timing was off, when you shut if off, it would fire at the wrong time and even cause the engine to spin backwards a bit and you could hear some of the cylinders leak down. Not sure if this fits your symptoms. I don't know for sure, but my suspicion is that most engines alive today will have nylon timing gears, which might make a slipped tooth possible early on in the engines life.

I don't have the capabilities to check for compression here. And I have checked for vacuum leaks. There are none. I guess the only thing I have left to check is my timing chain. Thanks guys. If y'all have anymore ideas let me know.

Just go buy one they are no that expensive. When you did the head gaskets do you find one was bad ?

Also did you put the push rods back in the same spot they came out of ? As the Intake and exhaust are different lengths.

Let me get this straight..... You replaced your head gaskets because of a noise you heard? What eveidence of failure did the headgaskets show? Was there obvious signs of failure or did you just assume that was the problem?

Did you replace or check your PCV valve? Did you check all the gap measurements on your plugs? It'll only take one plug to mess everything up. Does the truck idle rough and then smooth when the rpms are raised?

Have you checked out your TPS? Or maybe recalibrate it.
