Wasn't gonna hijack but this thread already seems to have gone astray a little.

My 04 says 5w-30 in the manual and on the oil fill cap. However, the people that always did my oil changes used 10w-30 according to the little reminder sticker they put in the window. Anyone have any thoughts on what difference that makes as far as how it runs or anything damaging or mileage-robbing? Based on the sticker, I just replaced mine with Pennzoil Ultimate synthetic 10w-30. Bought in sale at Walmart for about $21 for the 5 quart jug but then, like an idiot, I bought 2 more quarts at almost 6 bucks a pop instead of just getting another 5 qt. jug.

As for filter, I think it has always had a NAPA brand white filter on it. When I just did my own and changed to synthetic, I went with the MOPAR black filter, also at wally world for about $6.

OK, Now I'm confused.. Do you or do you NOT have MDS??

So it sounds like perhaps WM is no longer carrying the 5W-20 in the jugs anymore. Hmmm... that sucks. Maybe I'll stop by K-mart just to see if they're carrying it.

I'm glad that we got some mileage out of this thread.

Had the wife check Wally world...they have the 5w-20 but it's on clearance...Tire and Lube center still offers it in bulk though of course...I've got a drum of it in the garage so no harm to me I suppose

Just got back from Advance, only gallon jugs there @ $26.99ea. No 5qt jugs. 1qt was $6.99 I think. I bought the Royal Purple for $7.89, but I also took the military/fire discount. Brought 7qts and a Mopar filter to $55 and change.

It's at my Wal-Mart they just always seem to be down to one or two 5qt jugs. That's how it is at all the other auto parts stores around here too though. It must be in high demand around here. It's all I've ever ran. Mobil 1 and a K&N filter.

MDS came STANDARD on ALL 1500 series 5.7L hemi Rams from 2006-present. The only Ram that didn't get MDS with the 1500 tag was the MegaCab because it sits on a 2500 frame. The 2500 and 3500's DO NOT have MDS standard or as an option.
If you have a 2006 Ram with a Hemi, then you have MDS unless your engine has been swapped out for a different one?
2006-2010 5.7L Dodge Ram 1500 non-megacab..All have MDS
2006-2010 5.7L Megacabs...do not have MDS
2006-2010 5.7L 2500/3500..do not have MDS

As far as the weight of oil....5w-20 is not much difference than 5w-30. You won't have catastrophic failures or anything. The 5w-20 thinner weight oil is due in part because of EPA for emissions and mileage savings. I'm talking about tiny percentiles that allow a company to group their vehicles for a total savings of like 1mpg. Every bit helps the car makers when getting approved by the EPA.
Reading the oil.....5w-30 means 5Winter and 30weight summer. or 5weight when you first start the engine and 30weight after it warms up. yes it does get thicker. Do some reading HERE

I'm amazed how very few people actually understand oil viscosity ratings and their purpose.
