Mobil 1 5W-20 5qt jug @ Wal-mart?
#21
Wasn't gonna hijack but this thread already seems to have gone astray a little.
My 04 says 5w-30 in the manual and on the oil fill cap. However, the people that always did my oil changes used 10w-30 according to the little reminder sticker they put in the window. Anyone have any thoughts on what difference that makes as far as how it runs or anything damaging or mileage-robbing? Based on the sticker, I just replaced mine with Pennzoil Ultimate synthetic 10w-30. Bought in sale at Walmart for about $21 for the 5 quart jug but then, like an idiot, I bought 2 more quarts at almost 6 bucks a pop instead of just getting another 5 qt. jug.
As for filter, I think it has always had a NAPA brand white filter on it. When I just did my own and changed to synthetic, I went with the MOPAR black filter, also at wally world for about $6.

wow I guess so guess they want that thin stuff to do some serious coating but I dunno I can't see a 10 degree difference in oil to kill a motor or a system for that matter. the viscosity from 30 to 20 changes at friggin - 10 f. doesn't seem right I gotta check my owners manual but I'm quite sure on I have MDS and I use 5w-30.

If you have a 2006 Ram with a Hemi, then you have MDS unless your engine has been swapped out for a different one?
2006-2010 5.7L Dodge Ram 1500 non-megacab..All have MDS
2006-2010 5.7L Megacabs...do not have MDS
2006-2010 5.7L 2500/3500..do not have MDS
As far as the weight of oil....5w-20 is not much difference than 5w-30. You won't have catastrophic failures or anything. The 5w-20 thinner weight oil is due in part because of EPA for emissions and mileage savings. I'm talking about tiny percentiles that allow a company to group their vehicles for a total savings of like 1mpg. Every bit helps the car makers when getting approved by the EPA.
Reading the oil.....5w-30 means 5Winter and 30weight summer. or 5weight when you first start the engine and 30weight after it warms up. yes it does get thicker. Do some reading HERE
I'm amazed how very few people actually understand oil viscosity ratings and their purpose.
