Default Tire size / Rim size advice

My 4X4 Ram with the Hemi came with the 20" rims. I got a set of stock 17" rims as a spare set and I perfer the ride and the fuel economy with the smaller wheels, especially off-road. I'd like to keep the ride quality and have a slightly larger diameter tire (in between the 20s and 17s) with a thinner tire width. Taller to get the gear ratio a little taller and thinner so it cuts better in snow or sand. I've always had better luck with more narow tires than wide ones and it seems the fuel economy is better as a result.

Does anyone have any setups like I'm describing?

Any advice?

18" rims?

Thanks,
JIMMY

Really, no advice? What if I wanted the biggest baddest Monster Mudders that rubber everywhere, sounded like a train coming down the road and got 1.2 MPG?

Jimmy, I don't play off road but there was a time I did and I agree the taller narrower tire with a semi aggressive tread worked well for me. Wider heavier tires hurt MPG whether on or off road. Of course tires are always a compromise between your daily driving needs and the offroad terrain you play on.

i would find an 18x9.50 rim, and probably put some 275/60/R18, I believe that is about a 31.5 to 32in tire. that will be right in the middle for you as far as sizes.,,,,for as decent ride and decent grip combo check out the mastercraft courser C/T

I've always gone Here to play with tire size combos. You can compare width, height and even tells how far your speedometer will be off by.

Thanks for the help on this, especially the tire size app, that really helps.

Now I just have to figure out what size rims to go with?

Does anyone know the standard widths of the 20" and 17" standard rim. I'm not sure how they are measured?

Mine seem to come up at 10 and 9 inches?

That's correct I do believe. 20x10 and 17x9. Some of the really basic Ram's came with a 17x8. I ran into a guy that had a set of 'em.
