Any exhaust experts?
I have my exhaust dumped right where the cab starts. I have cats, but no muffler. Will adding some 3-4" piping with a nice 5" tip affect the sound much? Its got a deep throaty sound to it, but I like the way big exhausts look.
TL;DR - Will adding 4 feet of pipe affect exhaust sound?

yes it is going to make some difference, may even sound better with a performance muffler and then run it to the back, I had one of the cheasiest, homemade piece of crap exhausts on my truck when I got it, LMAO Ill get a pic of it, it was horrible, and choked the performance out of the truck, couldn't hardly spin the tires except from a dead stop.I still have it in my closet as a keepsake and example of how not to make an exhaust. I made my new exhaust 3in all the way through with a jones performance muffler (40 series style) and ran it underneath the truck beside the spare tire on the passenger side and dumped it just before my hitch. you cant see the exhaust at all unless you are under neath it. And let me tell you, man what a difference in power and I cant get enough of the sound when I romp on it at 30 mph and get the tires to light up. it has a nice muscle sound to it and I wouldn't change it for the world except to add some headers and a nice high flow cat. Ill try to get a pic in th morning of the most scariest exhaust youll ever see! It started out as basically stock to the cat, then went to three inch for about a foot or two, then some hack cut a hole in the side and curved out a pipe from it and ran two mufflers side by side on a single exhaust, then ran duels out the back, when i got it both mufflers were completely blown out the back and one of the duels had fallen off completely. It sounded great but when I just had the mufflers replaced it made a difference, but unfortunately due to money problems at the time let the guy doing the exhaust just replace the mufflers and dump them down. Cost me $150 bucks to replace it all and the pic will show you what i got for my money. Last year I spent another $300 dollars and had it fixed to what I am running right now. I took it to the track and ran a 9.36 with it on the 1/8th. Thats not super fast but I am mostly stock with a good exhaust and a cai. Heres a pic of what my exhaust looked like when i got the truck!

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm just looking for cheap things to do here and there while on spring break and this sounded like a good project for me. Also, my old lady would love to be able to have conversations while I drive....so with that in mind....i might be keeping it the way it is.

Dumping immediately after the cab causes lots of incab resonance generally. Also, running no muffler isn't necessarily better than having a muffler. Some of the performance mufflers actually provide better flow numbers than a straight pipe. Does mellow out the raspy/crackiling as well as cleans up the turbulence created in a no muffler system.
Mild steel will sound diff than Stainless
Longer pipe will change the tone vs short...etc
Continuing the piping should deepen the sound and also clean it up a little more and the in cab noise should decrease a bit while still having a loud *** exhaust when you get on it. I'd get a 3"IN dual 2.5" out Y or muffler and run dual 2.5" pipes with 3.5" or 4" tips. Going any bigger piping will not help any as there isn't that much cfm flow to warrant that large of duals. If it's one pipe then fine.

Awesome thanks for all the information guys. My mind is going in 100 directions right now. So far I need to decide between doing a prerunner grill, hellas, exhaust or a few other things over break ha. im really liking the grill idea wired up with some KC lights, but just worried that its not going to look too good since my truck isnt lifted and still has stock wheels/tires. decisions decisions.
