Not sure about the clearcoat thing, but your best bet is to stay away from anything chrome.
Factory one's hold up pretty well.....then there are black one's. Black hides rust a bit better than chrome.

How bout a set of these?

never thought of black ones..im sure they stay black after the 1st impact hits them?

yea i think i lil spray of clear coat and a good coat of wax should help ya out
EDIT: would only spray clear on painted/powdered lugs. chrome i would use neverdull to get the rust off and follow up with wax
