Default new rack problem

As with a lot of dodge rams I needed my rack and power steering pump changed on my 2003.The mechanic changed it and then said when he went to do the alignment the wheel wouldn't turn. Thought he got a defective rack and put in a new one.Now the steering, when you make a turn the steering wheel stops as if it is stuck but then will move the rest of the way. I am taking it back on Monday, but does anyone have any idea what this could be?

My guess is it is a defective rack. I can't believe the mechanic let it out of the shop like that. I re-read your post, are you saying he changed the rack twice?

I think I'd start using a different mechanic...

I would have to say a "bad batch"? Are these re-manufactured or new? It is still hard to believe there are mulitable defective racks being sold. Good luck.. Try a different brand of racks?

Yeah what else can I do. I'll just stay on them until it's right. I have been using this shop for years and have never had a problem. Just an unfortunate and frustrating situation.

I hear you, but at some point it has to be something other than the rack.

I agree. Besides the pump leaking slightly , the steering seemed fine except some hesitation when turning steering wheel when maneuvering. There has to be something else contributing to this problem.

Now that sounds like air in the pump. Last year my truck sat for several months and the steering fluid leaked out. Don't know why, but I filled iy up to go to the shop and it didn't leak anymore. But as the air worked itself out of the system I felt some hesitation.

So possibly they may need to bleed the pump and refill?
