Default Air Intake

This is probably an old question, but seeing as how I am new to Dodge 2500 Diesels, I figured I would take the chance and ask. I want better MPG's out of my truck, I want to start with the air intake. I have been told by many people that I should do this, but I do not know which company to go with. After many hours online, I think it is between the Quadzilla or the K & N, anyone out there with an opinion? Anyone out there with actual experience with this??? I just want something reliable with results, they don't have to be great, just better than what I'm getting now. FYI, I have a stock 2006 5.9l, getting 18mpg's on the highway.

The key to this mod is to get the restrictive "Hemi-Hat" off the front of the throttle body and the larger cone filter is a plus.

Hell, you can make one out of $10 in PVC for the pipe and elbows, another $20 in boot, clamps and paint and just pick up a good K&N filter for about $35 at the auto parts store and it will flow just as many CFMs as a $300 commercial unit.

I recently made one for a member who happens to also live in Orlando:

Hammer, you have a parts list to make these (ie; brackets, adapter to TB, sizes, etc)? Also, where did you get the shroud around the filter from?

heat soak is also a problem, the metal tube heats up from radiant engine heat much quicker than the plastic/pvc pipe

I had a metal one at first and it was just too loud. The heat was never really an issue and I live in the hot-*** Houston area. I re-did mine a while back to use the stock air box with a K&N drop-in. I tried the open cone filter concept with metal tubing, then went with PVC, then went to the stock airbox with the snorkel tube removed. Here is where I am currently and I like it the best.........

home brew is the way to go if you can do it . also the OP wanted to know the best performance , well without a good exhaust you are pi$$in in the wind . more air in and better flow out will give the cai the best enviroment to hit its peak performance

I dunno about that... I think anything that sucks in the same old hot air from under the hood is a waste of time.
