Default Ram Whines when accelerating

Hi guys and gals. New here. I have a 2004 quad cab 1500 with a hemi in it. Last week it started making a whining noise while driving. It only does it while i am accelerating in gear. I can throw it into neutral and hit the gas and it is silent. I can drop it back into gear and hit the gas and its loud at first, but then quiets down. It also does it when I'm slowing down. I checked the u-joints and they seem fine. Added some gear oil to the rear end and it hasnt helped any. I saw another post of a 04 hemi doing the same thing, but can't find it. Anyone have any ideas? Thx a bunch.

Jason

It also gets louder the faster I am going, but only while im mashing the gas. I don't have to mash the gas hard enough to even speed up, it makes the noise just by mashing the pedal a small bit. Thx again.

bearings , belt , drive shaft , could be a few things . make sure everything is lubed .

hear is a tip.. find one thing you think it is spray it down with WD-40 real good go for a drive ....if it still does it move on the the next location /part you think it may be ...keep doing that till you find the source. its only lube it wont hurt a thing. after you go from part to part and you drive and drive one of them parts is going to show itself by beaing quiet .....that last one will be the problem...then you can fix it.

Might want to check the rear differential. If it was low on grease, it may be worn.

It cant be the driveshaft. Its spinning all the time, in neutral or not as long as I'm moving. Thought it was the rear end and added gear oil to it cuz it was low, but it didn't help it a bit. It only does it while applying the accelerator in gear and moving. I can throw it into neutral and rev it up and it doesent do it. I can barely mash the gas while driving and it does it. Seems to be the worst around 30 mph, but gradually it does get louder as I speed up. Kind of sounds like a turbo spooling up.

Ive had my last 2 trucks do that. My 98 z71 and now my 06 ram hemi 4x4. Im just about positive its your pinon seal and bearings. Both trucks had that problem. Would whine so loud i could hear it over the pipes. You alt to get if fixed asap, on my z71 i waited to long and they had to replace everything but the ring gear and pinon but they had to replace all seals and bearings. (but thats a chevy for you) I was very surpised to see it on my newer dodge. But i sent it in early and it happend to just be the pinon seals and bearings

I would agree with what hemipower45 said. After all, it has to be something that is turning while you are moving if it doesn't do it when you rev the engine sitting still.

so many possibilities! Do you have a stock radio, or is it aftermarket, sometimes you can get alternator whine through your speakers, could be your alternator or your belt tensioner, could be rear end whine while under a load while in drive. You could be hearing your cold air if you have one. Thats a few, and I am sure there are more. Id bet its the tensioner though.

check your rear diff. Mine was doing the same thing, it would whine when you had your foot on the gas, basically it was connected. I pulled the rear diff cover and it was bone dry. Clutches were burnt up, gears had a really weird wear pattern on them.

I would jack it up and arefully run it with the wheels off the ground to help identify were the noise is coming from. My guess is pinion bearing.
