yeah, i haul a 20,000 pound concrete trailer, not the biggest load but it sure is a bitch to haul and a bitch and a half to stop. i'm sure big rigs are nervous whenever they have to make a turn or come to stop. i drive that rig with kid gloves, i start stopping a half mile back from where i intend to stop and watch my *** when i make turns.

4wheel abs was an option. very possible, and likely, that you have 2 wheel abs. and you locking up that tire is telling you that your brakes don't need to be any better than they are. if you're locking up a tire on dry clean pavement, you got enough brake, you're traction limited at this point.

glad it didn't end up ugly.

yea we have alot of those truck hauling pipes for this new huge gas pipeline. Those things do pivot over the rear wheel, I dont know how but I almost got taken out by one getting off the interstate and crossing back over one time. He didnt care that he almost hit me and then flipped me off when I stormed by

Good job on the quick reaction...if you were 3inches from hitting her, a second longer would have been $50/month extra on your insurance!

I used to drive tractor trailers. I stay way away from any of them that have that kind of setup or if they have their tandems slid forward. The more forward they are, the more swingout they have and the more likely they are to hit someone or get hit by someone.

Shiloh 24. To check if you have the 4wheel anti-lock, have a look at your front hubs. If you have an electrical "pigtail" going into the hub you have 4 wheel ABS. The rear ABS works from the rear speedo sensor, on top of the rear diff.
Not to critisize your driving and you in fact did notice quite a lot in your senario so you were looking ahead but, a lot of people over time let there "vision" drop. It's a very subtle invasive and unfortunate habit. A lot of people restrict there vision to what's litterally, just in front of their hood. You gotta' pick up your vision and look further ahead and plan your journey more. That's what they teach us over here in advanced driver training school. That and as hemiguy0302 says, use defensive driving techniques as they're all out for ya' blood + a lotta' luck lol.

On a side note, if you have to press the brakes really hard, be sure to wiggle your toes while doing so. The slight added and release pressure it adds helps stop the brakes from locking. Seriously.

Don't need that if you have ABS.
If you don't have ABS try Cadence braking. That really works, but is entirely superceeded if you have ABS.

Two words Smith system five keys to safer driving It's all about being a defensive driver and knowing your safe zones. They should teach it in school but you guessed it they don't. Do a search on it "smith system" Best advice I can give!!
