HELP-failed emission due to check engine light not coming on when keys in ignition
I was told I would need to replace the entire instrument cluster..which cost 600 plus. Is there anyway to replace this check engine diode? or is it even a diode...I was told it is not a bulb. I am going to check fuses .i wouldnt think the entire cluster is bad due to the only light out is the check engine light. Has anyone seen this before? Ive seen a few posts on the web but no clear answers. Please let me know if you can help.
Man that's about ridiculous OP. Where is this? What vehicle are we talking about here? Glad we don't have emissions here
That is a soldered in LED that rarely fails without some help. It is not suppose to be repairable, so the manual says replace the entire ICC. I would first try to replace/repair the led. If that proved impossible I would search the salvage yards. Good luck...
I live in VA....
2002 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9l v8
They said once you turn the key and all the dashboard lights (light up) the check engine light does not come on...this is a failure in VA. I bought this truck used and there could have been some shady person who busted this LED out.... Does anyone know what mfg part number this LED is? I have alot of eletrical engineers at my work and I was going to have one of them look at it. It doesnt make any sense....If someone was able to bust the LED so it doesnt work...I would hope I should be able to fix it. 1 LED shouldnt cost me 700+ dollars.....

As an electrical engineer that has built plenty of circuit boards that have LEDs in them i will tell you it is a 10 min job once you get that board out, unless it is a surface mount component (unlikely for an LED). The difficult part will be getting that PC board out. After you locate it all you need is some de-soldering braid and a soldering iron and you can get that old LED out easily. Just make sure that the replacement LED is the same wattage so you don't draw too much current and roast something else.
on a similar note, i find it hard to believe that the LED simply failed. LED's have an extremely long life span (10K hours) and they are very durable. I would be looking deeper then a faulty/failed LED. have you pulled the instrument cluster to see if the previous owner simply blocked it out with some electrical tape or something similar?

Try the key tricks...
with the ignition off, hold down the "reset trip button" on your gauges and then turn the truck to the run position but without starting it.
and
turn the key to the run postion (again, not starting the truck) 3 times in a row... On - Off - On - Off - On. See if you have any codes pop up in the window.

Ahh Virginia...I knew it! I lived there for awhile (Fairfax County) and they had the most ridiculous tests and even for dam headlights! I went thru hell with my motorcycle there...and then all the "county stickers" yada yada. I hope you find a cheap fix OP, keep us updated please.
