Post 03 Hemi 5.7 replacement?

Hi guys

I have been looking to find some info about replacing an engine and all I can find is people doing different swaps. errrr

I have an '03 Dodge Ram 4x4 Quad Cab with 5.7 hemii and I want to replace the engine. The current engine had horrible maintenance and it took a dump on me. Going down the highway I started to smell oil burning, then all of a sudden the oil dropped to 0. Then it came back after shutting off the engine but I have nasty valve train noises...

Anyway, I want to replace that engine with another Hemi 5.7 but I was wondering what years I can swap with and not have to change anything else or change things the least. I see that Gen 3 is 2002-2008 so can I swap with a Hemi from an '06 without changing wiring harness, etc?

Also I found an engine on Craigslist that has 47,000 miles and runs good but has a wrist pin problem, so what would I have to do to take care of that before I swap the engine. And also, does anyone have any tips or thoughts on what else I should look at or do to the new engine before putting it in?

Thanks, I have not been able to find much info on this and have been reading the forum for a while before signing up!!!

the 03 PCM is unique. The 04-05 PCMs are the same, and 06-08 are the same. The motor itself is different from 06-08 because of the MDS. If you're looking for a straight swap, its gonna have to come from an 03, otherwise you'll be swapping the PCM and wiring harnesses out also

So would it probably be eaiser to rip it down and rebuild it. Any idea on costs and a good place for parts?

Thanks for the quick reply!

inertiamotorsports.com for parts. not really much idea on cost. $2k for stock, probably $3k for a performance build? those are wild shots in the dark

Might try an auto parts store like Auto Zone for a remanufactures engine. I would just rebuild the original engine.
