Then again that home made power wire and trans line boost are good cheap starts also.
ive got 1100 in my exhaust. Ive got another 1000 or so in my cam, springs, rods, tuner and tunes. Another small piece in heads and ported TB. Ive got 1200 in an intake and timing cover thats not even on the truck yet.
My advice it to make sure you know what you want so you dont back out and change your mind and cost you more in the long run

well, I look at this question this way.
345 h/p in a 5500 lb truck, vers 385 H/p in a 5500 lb truck, getting that extra 40 h/p is not going to increase over all performnace in relation to the cost and investment in parts.
Start with using mid grade flue, keeping up on oil and maintance, the basic boaring stuff is the cheapest way to increase performance and MPG.
Over the life of the truck, a true dual ex conversion will increase performance and get more mpg, but will not pay you back with in the year.
CAI and tunners, Don't know a lot abought them, in Canada, a CAI ( volant or mopar ) is hitting over 500. bucks, bully dog tunner over 750.00 bucks, so in my thinking, 1100.00 to get a marginal increase in power and better milage is not worth my investment.
Rear gear ratios, automtic transmissons, tire size, city driving vers high way driving, towing, hauling and your budget are must knows before investing money to increase performance.
its all a qustion of money vers reward.

its too bad it costs so much to add hp to a gas motor. with a diesel you get an exhuast and a tuner you get another 100hp/200tq. about $1000-1500
with a gas you need to pay way too much. my exhuast and tuner was about $1000. this gives some power but only about 30hp over stock. im getting the jet thermostat and new gears/diff.
hopefully get a cummins this summer to save me from spending too much.
