Default No restart, out of the blue

New member looking for some possible info.

I have a 2004 Quad 1500 5.7 Auto 3.55 posi with 242K miles. I am a sales rep covering 11 states serving the Aftermarket Parts Industry. Truck started making a vibration that I thought was Lock-up Torque Converter shutter when I was acceleration from a stop. I performed a Trans Fluid exchange with ATF+4 with my machine and fluid looked very clean. Hard to tell the difference between old coming out and new going in. I have done it about every 30K since new. After service no shutter but I have had a very slight vibration from the drivetrain almost like a tire or u-joint. I checked u-joints and had the tires rotated and re-balanced. No difference.

Drove from Phoenix, AZ to Banning, CA straight with no stops (330 miles) at 70 to 80 mph with no problems on a full tank of gas. Got off of the I-10 to get something to eat and after about 10 minutes the truck would not re-start. The engine cranks over at normal speeds, battery good but no start. Checked all fuses for PCM, Ign & Fuel. Changed relays with other units from different spots. Disconnected Battery for several minutes. Still no start. Cycled Ign on and off 15 times. still nothing. All dash lights OK, Radio, wipers, lights, windows etc still OK.

Seems like fuel pump or no Ignition. Truck has been running great. Good smooth idle and lots of power on acceleration and steep hills.

I have been worried that the lock-up torque converter or the transmission was the cause of the vibration and it would be time to replace or rebuild the trans and install a new lock-up torque converter. However the fluild was nice and clean and the smell was normal not burnt.

Truck has been towed to a NAPA Auto car center and will be looked at tomorrow. 330 miles from home and I normally work on my own stuff.

Any ideas as to the cause of this problem? Has anyone had this happen to their truck?

Thanks

242K miles, it's time for something to go out. If it was the fuel pump, you could have checked by opening your door and listening for the pump to prime when turning the ignition to RUN. Spark you could have checked by pulling a plug wire, and rigging a screwdriver against the plug terminal and a good ground on the engine. When you crank it over, you should hear, and see a spark jump the gap. Don't try to hold the plug or screwdriver or you will get a nasty shock and probably hit your head on the underside of the hood. The mechanic will hopefully find the problem. Good Luck.

Fuel Pump went out just like a light bulb that burns out when you turn on the switch.
242K on the original fuel filter/fuel pump modual. Fuel pump for 26 gallon tank harder to find in the part stores than for the bigger tanks.

My vibration problem that I thought was from the Torque Converter or transmission was a bag U-Joint at the front of the drive line. Installed HD units with zerk fittings.

Back on the freeway traveling again.

Yup---fuel pump, same thing happened to my wife and I in our old 318 dakota on vacation. Pulled off the highway for gas, filled up------FULL-----got back in to take off, no pump. Ended up 70 miles from the gas station in Tallequah OK at a chevy dealer to get it fixed---3 days and a thousand bucks later. Really sucked, but now we can say we've been to tallequah. We eventually made to Phoenix without any further problems. Dakota probably had 180-190K on it at the time.

That was a dang good fuel pump to get that number of miles out of it. Very rare. As post #2 stated, its time for something to break and be on it's third fuel pump.
