Default Grinding Sound

When I floorboard my truck, every now and again, the RPM will be near redline and hold for a second and then make this horrible, but quick, grinding sound. It's a 2004 automatic with 24K miles

Is there any chance this could be pre-ignition?

I'm reaching on this, but what gas are you using? Do you have a mod list? What gear ratio? What you discribed is usually when pre-ignition occurs and happens more often when 87 octane is used, taller than stock tires and 3;55 gear. I'm keying mostly off of your statement that the engine is hesitating which can be the knock sensors retarding the engine. Just thinking out loud. Good luck...

87 Octane. mods list include a AFE cold air intake and a muffler delete style exhaust. I have 32'' tires and and extra 2'' of width. gearing is stock, so i'd think it'd be 3;55

This could be pre-ignition using 87 octane and WOT. It has been noted there can be detonation and piston damage using 87 octane and WOT runs. 89 octane is the recommended octane to use. Check your manual and see what it says to use. But I wouldn't tow or spin the engine up on 87. Search the forum there is a lot of information on this subject. Good luck
