I'm only triinng to help out but could it be the bearings in the rear end, pinion or wheel??? Had a truck that made that kind of noise when asking him power and when the rev went like more normal, the noise was going off.

 

the very first thing I would do is change the fluid and filters. Its possible the filters are getting plugged which can cause low pressure, lack of flow, pump cavitation
hence the delayed shifts under higher torque.

An old Chrysler trained guy, and died in the wool Dodge guy, told me that if I changed my fluid yearly--whether I thought I needed it or not, my trans would last a very long time.

I sold my 93 Dak 4x4 with 205K miles on the original trans. It was behind a 318 engine.

That does seem like the easiest and cheapest thing to do.....

It has not been changed since about 60K (at 118K now). Do it need to be worried about anything else happening?

turns out it was my water pump!

 

Glad you resolved it but how did you find out it was the water pump? was it leaking or overheating?

 

It went one day on my way home. My battery gauge went to 0 and the temp started rising. When I took a corner I had no power steering. When I pulled in my driveway all the antifreeze leaked everywhere!

I would think about doing a pan drop and replacing the filters though. Keep up on the trans maintenance so you won't have issue's or atleast that's the goal.
