Info gathering. Your help is appreciated
Hello all,
I believe this is only my second post, though I have been reading through this Forum on an almost daily basis. Lots of helpful information (and seems to kill alot of downtime at my job)
So, one of the first things I want to do to my truck is put a lift on and get bigger tires. For now my budget is tight so I want to try to get just tires and put them on my stock 17" wheels.
I was going to get 35" toyo open country M/T's but have been thinking about going for the 37's because I have such a big truck and don't know if the 35's will look right with it... Can I put 37's on with the stock wheels? Is the back spacing correct... will I need to do anything else?
Immediately people might think, duh... a lift kit... that is my next point
Rough Country lifts have been recommended by more than a few people. Both for price and effectivness. I was looking at them but... I have a 1500 Mega Cab and the only lifts under 1500 is a 2.5" level... there are 5" lifts under the 2500/3500 lift section... will that fit on my 1500 mega cab or will I have to go a different direction in order to fit 37's? If something else is needed, any suggestions?
Next, because of the tire size change, this will throw off the spedometer. So from what I understand Ill need to get a programmer. 2 different brands have been suggested from what I have read. Superchips and Diablo Sport Programmers. I think I have seen prices for like.. 300-600 ish for these. Any suggestions on which way to go? or specific model numbers? Is bullydog any good?
Another thing I read was that because of the bigger tires... they will be harder for my truck to turn... so getting different gears would be a good idea. 4.56's were recommended to someone else. Can I put 4.56's on my 1500 Mega Cab? It is a 4x4 5.7L Hemi. This means I need to get two sets correct? one for the rear and one for the front... I have seen online at Moe's Performance that there is one package that has a 9.25" rear axle and 8" front axle. Is this what my truck has? I have done alot of looking but can't find anything to say what my truck has... One of the main reasons I started this thread
Um, I believe lastly (i know.. this turned out fairly lengthy.. sorry) if I put in the 4.56's i also read that (now i might get this a little mixd up, feel i've been doing pretty good so far) a new... Limited Slip Differential would be good... this would be the Detroit Tru Trac or... um.. Auburn LSD... right? These are the two products I have seen recommended. This area I'm pretty lost in.. so.. any help ordirection would be good here.
Just want to say again, I think this forum is awesome and have gone from knowing literally nothing about trucks, cars, vehicles, mechanics... to well.. my limited knowledge i have now
Also, forgive me, I just finished a 12 hour shift 2 hours ago and am starting to get sleepy... think this post took like 15-20 mins to type lol... If I remember anything else I will try to add to this.
Thanks again guys.

I can't answer a lot of your questions, but I can say that 35's look good on Megas...here's a few pics of my mega with them. I have a 2" Hell Bent Steel leveling kit on the front and only have a slight, intermittent rub when turning. I wanted 37's but they are not practical for me as I have a 14k lb 5th wheel RV I pull. For 37's to fit, I believe you need at least 3" to 4" of lift. Ramhunter9 has 37's on his 2500 Mega 4X4 and I think he has a 3" lift.
In regards to the gears, yes you will need two sets. And yes, the Detroit Tru Trac and Auburn LSD's are the most recommended on this forum. I haven't done gears yet but plan to in the future.
Good luck to you, the mod bug is hard to fend off.
Here's a couple pics of mine for reference on the 35's.

So, does anyone know if I can go with a 2500/3500 Rough Country 5" lift for my truck? If I can it says the max tire size is 37x12.5 The Toyo tires only come in 37x13.5x17
How can I put the on if they are an inch wider than it is recommended with no rubbing. I do plan to go off road while hunting and don't want to damage my truck or new tires I plan to get. Remember I want to try to keep my 17" stock rims if possible.
Thanks for the pics Gator. Sharp looking truck you have. I think I'm leaning towards the 37's, the more ground clearance I can get the better.
If I do go with the 37's will I notice a big difference in Gas Mileage? I want to get the 4.56's so it shouldn't be a huge difference should it? A programmer will also help gas mileage won't it? Eventually I want to get a CAI and Exhaust system, so both of those will help gas Mileage too won't they?
If I get the 4.56's do I NEED to get the DTT or Auburn LSD? is it just recommended I get that at the same time? What are the drawbacks to not getting either?
If anyone has any links to good sites to find any of these products for good prices please let me know. Again, any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

37's will rub without an aftermarket wheel and correct backspacing. The tire is too wide to fit the stock rim

No it wont fit. Not much help on this one, sorry

Go with Superchips. You'll have amazing trans support that DSP just doesnt offer yet. Bullydog is a diesel tuner that tried to make money in gassers -- they suck.

Are you sure you have the 9.25" rear? If so, yes 4.56 will work. I thought all megas had the bigger pumpkins

Go with Auburn. Its $100 less and locks up faster. People will say "but it has clutch packs so it'll wear out" blah blah blah. I've never heard of anyone needing to replace the clutch packs even after 100k miles

Thanks for the suggestions on the Chip and LSD. For the Auburn LSD is it like a must have? or can I get away without it for a while.
All these other mods I am thinking I might do all at once. Like a whole new truck if I do it all at the same time maybe
Thanks for your Help AF
