Got into some deep water....well it wasnt too deep, just enough that my Vararam sucked up water into the intake.....my fault....Pulled all the plugs, cleaned them off, sprayed WD40 in all the cylinder chambers...changed the oil (there was a little water) put it all back together, turned it over with the plugs out and it spit some stuff out....put it back together, turned it over...sounded like it wanted to fire....then there was a loud ping from #2 cylinder (the worst of the 8) then it wouldn't turn over at all....guessing the rod is busted, hopefully the wall isn't scratched to badly....WIFE IS PISSED! any ideas on where I go from here? planning on pulling the pan to inspect the rotating assembly, will post pics once thats done....FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep, pulling the pan is the first thing I'd do.

That's the single reason I haven't gotten the Vararam, I'd love to have the sidewall of the truck for a second battery, but I can just see the first time I go huntin' or fishin' and get in a little bit of water the same thing happening.

Vararams are nice, do a great job at getting cooler outside air, but they only belong on track trucks and pavement queens...

 

keep us posted, i might be able to help with engine internals if the block survived. I have a junk 4.7 here at the house, but havent disassembled it yet, so i am not sure of the condition yet

 

I agree on pulling the pan as well and checking the bottom end. The next thing I woiuld do is pull the engine and break it down and hope for the best.

 

So how deep was the water are we talking puddle or pond? This was my fear when I bought my vararam, the saleman said you would have to be driving in water that was up to the bumper before you had to worry about it but you know how salesmen are.

Even if it's a pavement queen you better not get one of those in Lubbock, TX... water is up to the bumper frequently... lol.

What is the vavaram anyways, is it that glass covered contraption?

 

Yeah its the orange top mounted filter covered in glass. Its the best CAI for our trucks flow-wise, but has its drawbacks (cost and this issue are two of them).

If I had been running a factory intake, it would have been just fine...while I was sitting there pulling the plugs...a stock DURANGO went through it...my buddy's f150 came through it...the water wasn't that deep, maybe 12in, but it splashed up the front of the truck and the vararam sucked it all up....earlier I had cut slits in the intake tubes for drainage, it drained for a while. I went a picked up a cherry picker to pull the motor out...just gotta figure out if its gonna be cheaper to rebuild or buy a new motor....just sucks cause Im in Fairbanks, AK.
