What class hitch is on the 02 RAM 1500?
If it's factory tow package it's class IV. Without your specs, the LOWEST tow rating on an '02 Ram with the smallest engine and worst gearing available is still rated at 6150 lbs., so you're good...
BTW, you don't think gears make a difference, from Dodge's specs:
With Axle Ratio - 3.55 Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 6150 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 6650 lbs
Payload [i] = 1453 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 5197 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 3028 lbs/3028 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 3900 lbs/3900 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 11500 lbs

With Axle Ratio - 3.92 Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 7150 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 6650 lbs
Payload [i] = 1453 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 5197 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 3028 lbs/3028 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 3900 lbs/3900 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 12500 lbs
1000 lbs greater capacity between 3.55 gears and 3.92 gears...

Thank you everyone for the input. I have the 3:55's. They should do the trick. I don't plan on going near 6100#'s. Thanks again for the quick responses! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions since I'm a noob to the RAM.
i had 3.55s and they SUCK towing. i now have 4.56 and its simply amazing. the truck doesnt downshift on most highway hills

Although I've not included capacities for 4.10 and 4.56 gears as Dodge does not release those specs, you can take these numbers for 3.92 gears and add roughly 1000# to it for 4.56s according to the American Camper Association...

Yea I know there only 3.55's but I just upgraded from a TrailVoy. I was towing this trailer with my TrailVoy and that only had the 3.42's in it. Actually the Voy handled the tow very well. It struggled up hills, but I towed in 3rd and went 60 the whole time on a 3 hr trip. The only reason I bought this RAM is for pulling the trailer so I wouldn't beat up the Voy. So I figured the RAM'S 3.55 would do much better than the 3.42's the Voy has in it. I live in Northeast Ohio (Cleveland) and its pretty flat around here.
