You guess correctly. On mine, the regular 500 had a different way the bulb mounts. I am not sure of the 500ff would even take that bulb. The clip on the ff is different and would make things troublesome.
On the regular 500, I did add a small gasket to the bulb as it barely touched the lens. I did not want it to possibly break the bulb, so the gasket gives it a little bit of clearance in there.
