Default Clutch fan housing has a fluid leak, weird?

Ok not crazy but got a fluid leak I can't find, Feels like brake or Hydraulic. Looking underneath I can see that the clutch fan aluminum piece is damp on one side/half of the assy. The fluid appears to have been thrown outwards and has left a trail about 2 inches wide around the fan shroud. It has also sprayed upward under the hood and the Hat and Intake tube, etc is frekled with drops. looking downward or from above where the fluid appears to have met the alumininum fan piece I speak of is the coolant tank, so no where it could have dropped onto that from above. So all fluids are good, no pwr steering or brake fluid loss, so yes I am at a loss to explain.

Note that about a month ago I installed the efan and in the process needed to reattach this part as the nut assy is holding on that waterpump pulley and of course the old fan blade was discarded.

So is it just that this piece is now leaking some type of balancing fluid?
Also noticed that while idling the belt tensioner was moving up and down an inch or so either way as the belt travelled through its path, is this a concern?

So ya Weird. Every thing else checks out. I reved the crap out of it and no more signs of fluid anywhere.
Yesterday I kept her at about 5 grand on the HWY in second as I waited for a furd to pass me so I could get in behind him and not hit a slower semi and then sneak back around into my R/H lane all the while making him wonder where I came from so quickly maybe thats when I cracked open the oyster. Those F150's have girly tailpipes anyway.

Sorry for long post but I have chosen not to smoke and am approaching day two of my crazyness but have so far saved $20 BUCKS.

You can just remove the fan clutch. You don't need it. I don't remember if the clutch is silicone-filled or not. They did that many years ago, but I don't know what's in there these days. Anyway, remove the fan clutch (which can be a b!tch) and be done with it. Clean up the residue and see if it comes back.

The idler will move some while the motor is running. A two-inch swing might be a bit much. Might be time for a belt. Congratulations on quitting smoking. I've been off those things for 27 years.

Certainly a good decision to quit smoking. Nasty and costly habit.

As MikeHTally said, you dont need the clutch fan on there for anything if you have a e-fan. The water pump pulley will stay on. LOL

Are you sure everything around the water pump is also sealed? I know you said you think it is hydraulic based and that makes sense with the areas under the hood being "freckled". Thats a certain sign of something oily.

Maybe overflow from the coolant bottle (water and antifreeze) and it hit the pulleys and got distributed from there???

MikeHTally: We came down to Tally last weekend and blew some money. Next time we come down we should all get together and go out for dinner or something.

Well, thanks but coolant bottle, hoses are dry and the shaft style nut is dry.
IMO I need the nut to keep the pulley attached to the waterpump, as not sure it would stay there without the nut.

So now that the aluminum piece is toast I will just cut it off where it meets the long nut cause if it had the fan blade attached it prob would be seized at this point anyway and require replacement.. so shoulda sawed her off when e-fan went in.

Just for the record, the pulley will stay on without the nut. trust me I know. But there is nothing wrong with leaving it on.

That's good reasoning, and it sounds logical. It's also wrong. Guys gave been running efans for YEARS without the clutch fan. Take it off already.

Alright I believe you Weed as the pulley is probably seized to the pump after 236,000 Kms anyhow. Frog I already had disgarded the fan blades when efan went on but when I take it off will look it over to confirm if it did indeed contain fluid as that was my main concern.

I was referring to the whole assembly.

Yeppir, take that thing off. The pulley is pressed onto the water pump shaft. If you shop for water pump, you'll see the pulley is included.

Well there you go, now I comprendais, thanks Guys! thats what I get for not asking the Forum bout that when I went and did the mod in the first place. Drove her hard today and no more leak spray, so case closed except for havin to "deep six" the nut overboard.
