havent seen amny problems with these transmissions. great trans!
you must not be looking hard enough! haha. apply a decent amount of extra power from the engine to it, and it will fail.

and to the OP. when your truck sits over night, the torque converter drains. so it takes a few seconds for the pump to fill it back up. some have found that replacing the filter helps alleviate this problem. there is also that TSB that talks about the filter itself (the spin on, not the sump) make sure you have the correct filter in there that the TSB calls for.

Ok, thankya sir.

Do all the torque converters on the 3rd gens drain down, or just the ones with the screwed up filter? I never had an issue with slow starts or the converter draining down on my second gen... and the in-line check valve was removed on that.

And where is this filter? My 2nd gen didnt have one, so this external screw on type filter is news to me.

its kind of hit or miss with the 3rd gens. some have the problem, some dont. its really not something to be TOO concerned about.

the filter is inside the tranny. you will have to drop the pan to get to it. its really not hard though. just have 6-8 quarts of ATF+4, some RTV, and something to catch all the fluid and clean up the mess.

once you drop the pan, there are two filters visible. the large flat sump filter, and the screw on (looks just like a small oil filter) the spin on is the one in question.

Alrighty guys, thanks.

Yeah, I changed the trans fluid plenty of times during the last ten years I drove olyelr... not the most funnest of jobs, but easy none the less. Why the he!! cant they just install a dang drain to make it easy? Jeesh

So let me get this straight. If i change out the twist on filter, I may have a CHANCE of curring this small issue with cold start ups? The fella I bought it from said the dealer just changed the fluid and filter... wonder if they changed that one. HMMMMMMM

Thanks for all the help guys. Mucho appreciated.

you never REALLY know what the hell the dealership is going to do. they might have just done a flush with one of their machines, and not changed the filters at all. for them, that is way easier, and less labor intensive for them.
