Key trick for codes?

I remember reading it somewhere on how to perform it, but for the life of me I can't find it now. Any guidance would be extremeley helpful.

Don't start it, but on-off-on-off-on. Be ready with pencil and paper to write down what you get. When it says "done", it is.
