Default 06 cummins wheel/tire question

i have a 06 quad cab 4x4 cummins with a leveling kit on it. it currently has 315/70/17 tires and the stock chrome wheels. i did a converter and this comes to like a 34x12 tire or so. i talked to the tire shop here in town and i am wanting to go to a 20 or 22 inch wheel but they say i can't run a 35 with that size wheel. in my understanding a 35 inch tire is a 35 inch tire no matter what size the wheel is. am i wrong? also if i can run the 20 or 22 on the 35.... what would be the best backspacing to rub as little or none? i would like the tires to stick out a little but not alot

The price of a 35" tire on a 20" wheel is outrageous and a 22" is even more.

yeah they r alittle pricey. since we got that cleared up. is it possible for me to clear a 37x12.50 if i add on a body lift with the leveling kit? been doing some figures with my money and i believe i have enough to go with a 37" tire on a 20 and buy the body lift.

Most guys go with a 4.5" BS wheel for proper fitment. On a 35" tire, you can get away with 4.75"-5" backspacing but not for a 37". You'll need the 4.5" which pushes the wheels center further out from the fender.
a 35" tire is a 35" tire whther it's on a 15" rim or a 30" rim. The difference is sidewall height, nothing else. A nice set of 35's on 20's in E-load weight can range from $800-1400 for just the tires. Going with a 17" wheel keeps you on the lower side of that range and for the same tire in a 20" rim would be on the higher side.
