Project Done! 12V Cummins in an 03 1500 functioning like OEM

6 Attachment(s)
Many of you have seen my threads on my Father-in-laws pickup that we have yanked a 360 V8 out of and installed a 12V Cummins in it. This has been a true family project with very little outside help. We have read the manuals for wiring specs until our eyes crossed and finally one step at a time we figured out how to make it work like factory. Here are some beginning pictures for those that have not seen it.

Please be patient I am loading pics as quick as I can.

I am sorry that my video skills are about a 1.5 out of 10, but here is a shot of the dash, followed by a running shot of the engine. I have a very slow drive away clip, I don't think my Father in law wanted to show off for the camera.:icon_frown:

Now you need to get some pictures of that bad boy muddin!

huseman808 07-05-2010 10:46 PM

...epic...

Big_Wheel 07-05-2010 10:47 PM

very very Cool!

I know I have not made the story real interesting, but the work that we have put forth into his truck has been well worth it. A small list of extras that have been installed include an Airdog 150 fuel pump, a 4" Diamondeye exhaust, a custom intake tube with an AFE air filter and a custom cut fuel plate. Custom items built by Ben (Brother-in-law) include engine and transmission mounts, crossmember on the frame under/behind the oil pan and the intercooler tubes. There are a few parts gathered from the local scrapyard (electric fan, coolant/washer jug and A/C lines that could be modded) to save a few dollars. Everything on this truck is fully functional down to the A/C and cruise control. After it is said and done I am proud to say I was a part of this project and glad I can show it off for him.

I don't think it would go far being a 2WD.

sbsga 07-05-2010 11:39 PM

lol, you would be amazed what you would get through at 60mph, just remember you might not reach the other side with every part remaining

AF_HEMI 07-05-2010 11:45 PM

mad props man. go steal the truck from him and give us a smoke show!!! (tires and exhaust)

I will get him to show it off soon enough. Maybe a dyno run will be in order. :icon_clapclap:

bello926 07-06-2010 12:45 AM

if my hemi ever blows, i wanna do a swap just like that!

Blk05HEMI 07-06-2010 01:59 AM

Good stuff!!

weedahoe 07-06-2010 06:33 AM

That is cool for sure. How hard was the swap over in all? What were the difficult parts?

olyelr 07-06-2010 06:40 AM

SO BADASS.

Mad props to you guys for pulling that off, that is quite an accomplishment. CONGRATS!

Chris Mallett 07-06-2010 09:46 AM

The easy parts were the general install. The wiring and understanding signals that it needed were the brain beaters. The driveline was shortened 2 or 3 inches (can't remember now) sleeved the front and installed it directly to the 48RE. 4" exhaust is a little tight, but cleared without beating anything around. Intercooler tubing is one piece on each side (Ben's creation) that cleaned up the install greatly. Hated to show off under the hood before getting the paint applied and choice items polished but oh well. A/C lines were a little tricky but they appear to be made by Dodge for the truck once we were done. Thanks for all of the compliments!

dirtydog 07-06-2010 10:48 AM

Def some good work done there! Nice job.
Did you use the stock 9.25" rear end?
How about the front suspension, did you make any changes to accomodate the extra weight?

RubberFrog 07-06-2010 10:51 AM

super bitchin

Chris Mallett 07-06-2010 11:03 AM

Yes, stock 9.25, the front end was treated to a set of stock 2500 2wd springs, 2" shackle drop on the rear.

Chris Mallett 07-06-2010 11:05 AM

Oh, and it hit the scales at 5280#.

truckin151 07-06-2010 02:20 PM

SWEEEEEET!!!!!!!!! Cant wait for thee vids actually showing that thing off

06DodgeRam15004.7 07-06-2010 02:37 PM

That must have been a fun project. I cant wait to see the vids of it in action.

02Steve1990 07-06-2010 02:42 PM

Wow, can't wait to see this in action either

RedTruck-VA 07-06-2010 03:10 PM

Man, you guys are good. Not many folks could have pulled that off. How about an estimate of man-hours spent on it. I have done a few swaps but never to OEM specification. You guys are GOOD. Well done....

ram_bo06 07-06-2010 03:39 PM

Wow thats a serious task you completed their. Definitly some self satisfaction to be had after completion. Very nice!

xfeejayx 07-06-2010 04:33 PM

nice work, hell of an accomplishment.

not to be an ass or downplay what you've done, but what made you do it? increased torque, and the weaker driveline that the 360 had, you've almost set yourself up for failure down the road if you ever use that thing to its potential. nevermind that you might wreck that independant front if that engine is heaver by much.

Trupiano 07-06-2010 05:11 PM

Super badass man! Not much you cant do when your determined! Bring on the burnouts!!!!

Albertaramfan 07-06-2010 05:36 PM

Damn man that's sweet!!

I thought about doing this to my second gen but never thought it could be actually done!

mc35 07-06-2010 07:49 PM

Can I have it? Haha! Super badass! Well done sir.

BadHab1t 07-06-2010 08:01 PM

truly a master piece cant wait to see vids of it in action....

chevyguy1973 07-06-2010 10:18 PM

Wow! Just thinking about what it must have taken to interface the electronics gives me a headache. Having that beast in a truck that weighs in a under 5,300 pounds though is bound to be a bag of fun!

Rookie1500 07-06-2010 11:34 PM

Wicked! Like the rest said, i cant wait for more vids!

davb673 07-06-2010 11:42 PM

I am looking forward to the salt and pepper show (tire and engine smoke)! Congrats and kudos to the family for putting this together. AFter the recent digging I have personally done in Dodge/RAM wiring diagrams, I agree that is the hardest part of this swap. I'd have to consider this if my 4.7 blows...

Man hours, estimated 4 hours an evening before our eyes went crossed on schematics, small tests on signals and so forth, 5 out of 7 days a week, for about 2 months just on wiring. Complete project probably 6 months.

Don't take this as me being a smarta$$ but this is the best I can explain. The biggest reason was the cool factor. Where else do you see a RCSB 1500 sporting 325-350hp and 750ish ft.-lbs of torque? (estimate for now)If the rear fails, oh well, they make stronger parts. I an sure many people have built a 500hp gasser and run it on a stock rear for at least a while. I could be wrong.

And I could be wrong on another equation, but don't the QCLB trucks of this vintage have the same front end parts as well? I would think the front end weight of them would be close to what this is now. Just my .02. Anyone have any input on this?

megablacktank 07-08-2010 08:28 AM

Dude made props on the accomplishment!!! She looks really clean and nice!

nateroach 07-08-2010 08:46 AM

Amazing accomplishment man, looking forward to the vids :)

Anyone have any input on the weight of the QCLB trucks (front end) and if they have the same parts?

the horsepower isn't the big issue, that torque is going to kill your drivetrain. but you got the resources to to put a cummins in a 1500, i'm sure you can beef up the rest. again, sweet ****!

Chris Mallett 07-12-2010 01:34 PM

Yeah the torque will be the killer. Probably about the time you get the tires sticky...

Gasturbine 07-12-2010 03:52 PM

I cant even fathom all the logistics of such a project...nicely done Chris!
