Default Doing a DIY CAI this weekend

2 questions:

I see a lot of people paint their PVC black, why not just buy the black PVC?

Whats the difference between using the stock air cleaner box and a K&N filter over buying and making a new cone one?

Thanks

As far as I can tell, I'm guessing the paint is high heat resistant, and a Cone Filter, K&N for example, allows for better air flow, the cone allows more suction and the box is still a bit restrictive. If you go with the cone filter you will need a small one for one of the hoses that attaches to the airbox, or you can just drill a hole slightly smaller than the hose and let it run off of the CAI. Other people on here can give MUCH more help, so ask around and look it up on the search thing.

That makes sense about the filters, I think I even read that in one of the 100 CAI threads. Its hard to pick specifics out of those ramblings

But as far as the PVC goes, I am talking about the black landscaping PVC instead of the typical white. Is there a reason no one uses that?

I know sewer pipe is gray, maybe it's similar to the black stuff??? If so, that stuff is 1/2 the thickness of PVC. I see no reason why you couldn't use it other than it may get hot very quick compared to the thicker PVC white stuff AND your limited with elbows and connectors. When I did my home brew CAI for my mustang, I had to use PVC because there wasn't an array of elbows to suffice the job that was entailed.

that is true now that i think about it. When I made my spud gun out of the black, it was tough getting the reducers and threaded sections I needed

Done. Not too bad. Letting the silicon dry on the sensor right now so I can go fire it up.

Notice I dont have a heat shield, how important is this to have? How hot will this setup get and is it bad to get really hot?

Thanks
