Hemi Engine Swap
Hello Everyone,
I have a 2003 Dodge Ram QC 4.7L 2wd. While towing my boat, the oil pressure when to Low and my "Check Gauges" light turned on. I pulled over and stopped my truck. I had it towed to the dodge dealer and they told me the engine was full of sludge and therefore recommended a new engine, preferrably upgrading to a hemi. I got a second opinion from another mechanic, who told me the same thing. While looking at my options, I asked around and my mechanic told me to look for a used hemi and as long as we have the computer and the harness, then he would be able to adapt it. I did, and I found a hemi off a 2005 dodge durango and I bought it with the engine hareness and the ECM. He was able to sit the engine in my truck, bolt it on to the transmission, but he now says that he no longer wants to get involved with the electrical and is asking me to look for someone to finish it off. I have asked around and no one wants to take an incomplete job on. Any suggestions?
My mechanic says that the engine harnesses are different and to look and see if there is a conversion kit around, but I have not came across any. He does not feel too confortable getting involved with the the electrical. What can I do? Help please

You have a real problem, I don't think most folks can afford to have someone do this swap. I would suggest the only affordable way to complete this difficult swap is to do it yourself. Good luck. Where are you located?
Maybe you should look at this thread here though
Hemi engine swap! finally got it and starting swap, ill keep updating this as i go!
x2 to post 2,3 and 4.
The mechanic/manerger knew what was before them and must to have had in mind to what specialist he would need/call-in/farmOut to do the tie-ups on everything thats was beyond the scope of their capabilities to put a happy customer back on the road. We all know It happens everyday with auto work stages.
Is this a li-git, store front car service operation?
Did he have anything toward selecting the new used engine? OK'd the spec?
Leave the vehicle at his place and get an attorney to drop a flash letter (cert) to him even though there was not a contract/workOrder written, he is still responsible because he jumped into the job as a "gentleman's agreement from a business", you would pay when the good job was completed and the customer satisfied.
As mentioned, make it a clear promise there will be court action in mind and he'll pay for someone else to do the work. Now, he can't be trusted to touch anything with this kind of attitude display. WoW!
"This is a good example, hanging between a hardPlace and a rock".

First of all, "too much sludge in the engine" means clean the sludge out of the engine. You say you pulled over because you got a CEL and had it towed, NOT that the engine died on you.
My bet is that the 4.7 was salvageable for a whole lot less money than a swap.
Had a similar thing happen to me in a brand new Furd F150 with 14k miles on it, pulling a bass boat. Mine was due to a crack in a piston, which was under warranty but still repairable for a whole lot less than an engine swap.
My guess is the idiot saw big $ in an engine swap and now is in over his head.
You contracted with him for a COMPLETE job and now he's leaving you high and dry.
I gotta agree, get an attorney...

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to back out of doing the swap and go back to putting a 4.7. There has been too many complications with trying to do the swap and have decided to just put a 4.7
I did a 4.7 to 5.7 swap. to a Dakota="HemiDak-Quad".It's not as hard as it looks but takes a lot of time and patients. If you have those two things I'll help you .
Do you have the computer and wiring harness (from) the "computer or computers" (to) the 5.7 Hemi Motor, and transmission ? I guess the most important question I should ask is "DO you still want to do the swap"? Did you get your truck back from the man who said he would do it ?
