Default P0628 code

Was driving my 2004 Cummins with 102K on down the freeway when it started to sputter then died on the side of the freeway. The code P0628 came up so i went down and bought a new Lift Pump OEM from the local parts store, put it on and truck started could hear the pump turning on and off as needed. Started driving back down the road and started to sputter again and blow white smoke then would clear out and run fine. It would sputter about every 30 seconds. I pulled over let it idle then it would die after about 1-2minutes. Any help from anyone that has had this problem or can give me some advice. Thanks guys, and i have search every forum and just cant seem to find the answer

you will get more responses in the diesel part of this forum.
white smoke is lean. you either have water in your fuel or failing fuel components.
i cant remember if 2004 came with a WIF (water in fuel) drain or sensor.
i would diagnose the wiring to the lift pump. sometimes i see problems with the wiring, but then again it could be a defective pump from the parts store. Usually with a motor like cummins, people only go with an upgrade or oem.
