I have 30.5 inch tires and allowed myself be talked out of installing 4:56 and went with 4:10 gear.

I wish I had gone with 4:56.

The time you REALLY need 4.56s is when you step up in tire size. I was taching around 1600 on the interstate with my stock 3.92s when I stepped up to 35" tires.
Passing a vehicle REALLY sucked! The truck would bog until I built up rpms to around 2100 then it would shoot forward.
Now I just touch the gas and I'm up and around any slow pokes (usually Furd drivers, LOL) in my way!!!

Personally, if I had a 4x2 and was evenly remotely moddin' it for speed, I'd go straight to the 4.88s. We took Pyros 4x2 w/33" tires to my local 4x4 shop and had 4.56s put in and now he regrets not going to 4.88s for "hole shot", LOL...

I want to get that kit and I also want to put a new LSD in. My truck has 56,000 miles on it. Do you guys think it is worth putting all that money into it? I plan to keep the truck till it die`s. I guess if it was a new truck I would feel better about putting that much money in it is what I am trying to say.

Thoughts?

56k miles is nuthin', take care of it and you should see another 100k out of it minimum. Get the gears...

if anything the gears will extend the life of your truck by taking some of the strain off of your trans/motor

I would like to have a locking RD. Does this one stay locked all the time?

Nah.....that's not a good choice for a street driven daily driver.
It will scrub off tyres like no tomorrow. This unit is too severe as a daily driver as it's locked all the time.
If you do a lot and I mean a lot of offroad work and not too much on good tarmac, then I would say yes, go for it.

But f you do a lot more pavement work and it's your daily driver..........try this one.

I and many on here, have the DTT. It remains an open diff until it senses that torque needs to be applied to another wheel. It make daily use more acceptable and easier to do.
It works great. Another alternative is an Aurburn unit, which uses clutch packs, but in a much better and stronger way than our pos stock lsd's.

You DO NOT want a true locker UNLESS you are turning your truck into a weekend, off-road only warrior!

Non-selectable lockers are not very streetable no matter what the manufacturer tells you.

IMO your choices should be limited to either the DTT, Auburn LSDs or a SELECTABLE locker that which can be turned on when you need it and act like an open diff when you don't. Good choices would be the ARB Air Locker or Auburn Ected...

Interesting thread. Just got my 2004 1500. It's got the Hemi (good), and 3.55 gears (not so good). I'm probably going to make a gear change and add an LSD in the future, after I deal with the more important stuff, like tires.
