Trans pan seal?? - RTV, gasket, or both? what's your opinion?
I've used the search quite a bit and can't seem to find a difinitive answer. Soooo, what do you guys prefer? RTV only, Gasket only, or applying RTV to the gasket?
This weekend will be the second time I've done the fluid change. I only used RTV last time because the Wix kit didn't have a gasket last time. When I bought it yesterday, it came with a gasket. I like the idea of not having to mess with RTV, but am kind of scared of not using any. I'd like to hear from some guys that have used the gasket w/o RTV and if you've had any drips.
Thanks for the info!

Personally it doesn't matter. Your actually stopping a leak from happening. and both methods work fine. pressure, via torque against suspension and immovable objects. The pan and transmission are immovable while the gasket or rvt serve as a suspended property squished together with bolts, ie; torqued.
wow rocket, getting all scientific on us huh?
anyways, either way you go, gasket or rtv, i can offer you one word of advice. do not over tighten the pan bolts, they WILL snap very easily.

Some models do not list or require a gasket (I have the 3.9 with the 42RLE 4-speed tranny). I did the tranny filter change and rear diff fluid change recently, used RTV and found it to be quick, relatively non-messy and have not had any leakage. Just make sure when you scrape the old gasket (RTV or cork/rubber) that you don't gouge the mating surface 0f the pan or housing. Then, you WILL have a leak regardless of what gasket material you use.
