Default Airing down for sand...

I'm heading to the beach tomorrow and may end up driving on the beach alittle. My question is would airing down my 33's on 20's help at all? They are the factory 275/60 and i know i dont have much sidewall but would taking alittle out help?

I know some of you do alot of beach driving that might be able to help.

it will help, but if they are the factory wranglers bring yourself a tow rope just in case. I speak from experience. You can see my big beast in my signature about a month and a half ago i got stuck on the beach and no one could get it out before the tide came in. My tires are 12.5" wide and all that did for me is dig a about a 13" wide whole for each tire. The guys that were on the beach with winches were charging $250 to pull me out i told them i didn't care how much it costed just get me out before the tide came we didnt make it. I had a toyota with a winch that was chained to a 2500 HD diesel GMC and i was pulling them into me, my truck didn't want to budge. It was sucked in so bad i had to call a special wrecker company with a truck that had a 455 in it with 44 super swampers on it. I lifted his front end 3ft in the air trying to get me out. After letting his truck sit doing a wheelie with his front end off the ground for 10 minutes gravity finally broke the suction and he was able to get me out. I have had to deal with the insurance company totalling it out and me buying it back and i have $3,500 into fixing it and i finally have my truck back. Be careful on the beach and come prepared with a min of a tow rope, shovel, a shackle hitch.

Sidewall and a non-aggressive tread are your best friends in sand. The more soccer mom type of tread you have, the better.

With 33s on 20s you have NO sidewall, so airing down for a bigger footprint is gonna pretty much be non-existant.

Most of these "drive on" beaches have pretty packed down sand though, so you should be ok. But DON'T visit any soft sand!!!

I have taken my 2x4 truck all over in the Oceano Dunes here in California. I have been going there since high school and I have had three different vehicles that I went wheelin all over. The trick is to air down to about 15psi on all four tires. When my Ram was new it had the stock 20's and I was able to go pretty much anywhere and climb quite a few hills I got stuck one time because I slowed down suddenly and lost my momentum, but with a little digging and by airing down to 10psi I drove it right out. It takes a lot of practice to get good at it. Like Hammer said a mild AT or street tread seems to work really good in the sand. Unless you have a lot of horse power you want to stay away from aggressive mud tires as they tend to dig. Next time I go there I will take some pics so you guys can see what it's like.

Stay away from the wet-wet sand (big suction!) , or as mentioned, sand-dune loose.
Kicker417 x2, do not air-down no better than 20% if starts to slip/spin, stop! it there, air-down, take the bucket and start wetting the sand around each tire and behind for a few feet. Get out the direction you came. Have fun"""""""

I go to Pismo (Oceano Dunes) about 3 times a year and always air down to about 15psi and never have any problems. On the wet stuff or up in the dunes! People are always getting stuck even in 4x4's. You have to know how to handle the sand. The Hemi tears it up!

If your that worried, buy a couple of cheap "sand boards" and throw them in the back.
Don't forget your shovel and you will be good even if you get stuck.

Another Pismo dunes go-er right here!

I too have been going to pismo for quite awhile now. I used to have a toyota that I could never keep a working front differential in. When I was younger, the dune trips were every weekend it seemed like. Anyways, I floated around the dunes in two wheel drive all day long... even up comp hill and out to the drag strip.

Mud terrains are not the answer for sand and MOST snow. Air down to 10-15 pounds. Easy on the throttle when in soft stuff, and trying to get going. Then once you get going, you can throttle up as much as you want. Never stop on a hill either.

Common sense will get you a long ways in the sand. have fun, and shoot some shots to share with us!
