because of the front rotors, 17" is the smallest you can go. It needs to have a 5x5.5" lug pattern

The smallest you can run is a 17" wheel. I don't know what you mean by what other truck rims you can run, you can run any wheel in the universe as long as the bolt pattern is 5x5.5

For winter rims, CL would have my vote also.Just need something simple for the snow, sand and salt.

Not exactly true. The wheels need to have the proper backspacing(offset) as well. 17x8's should have between 4.75"-5.25" backspacing and 17x9's should be 5.25"-5.75". Ram wheels have 5x5.5" Lug pattern as others have stated.
Any stock Dodge Ram wheels for your Gen. will fit. For instance Dakota wheels I believe have a 5x5"?? pattern which aren't big enough and 5x5.5" universal wheels or other manufacturer wheels will likely have a different backspacing. Backspacing is what moves the wheel in and out. The less backspacing you have, the further out they will stick.

Also, I'm in the Northeast and have Cooper LTZ's on my truck. 275/60/20 and they did a very good job this past winter and the previous winter as far as all around traction. Phenominal water tire and a descent snow tire. I just put 4 tubes of sand over the axle and the tires bite right in.

so, I'm lookin at going to 17" wheels as well, and the ones i am looking at are some MotoMetals, but it looks like there may be an issue based on what you wrote above, offset and backspacing etc. Here are the specs of the wheel:

Motometal Series MO951 Wheel
17x9, 5 on 5.5 Bolt Pattern
Backspace 4.53 in.
Max Load = 2200lbs
Finish = Black
Hubcentric = No
Offset = -12 mm

Will this wheel work on my truck? All I want to do is replace my 20s with 17s. Truck is levelled.

keep in mind wide tires are not good in snow. skinny tires are better.
if you go with a 17" rim i would go with a 265/70/17 or a 265/75/17

Yeah they will fit, but they will stick out 1.25" further than your current wheels with the same size tires. With normal stock width tires...they would look silly IMO. I put 1.5" spacers on my stock width tires/wheels and thought it looked ridiculous. Only way I thought it would look good is going to a wider tire and ofcourse, wider is no good for snow.
Stock 20's are 9" wide and have a backspacing of 5.75" which is equiv. to +19mm offset.

I'm not sure I want it to be 1.25" out farther than normal. Actually, when I get the wheels, I am looking to get the tires at the same time and I am looking at 33x12.5. These are wider than stockers right?

BTW, can you tell me the difference from stock if I got a wheel that had 4.75" backspace and -6MM offset? Again looking at 17x9 wheel and 33x12.5 tire.
