Higher octane is not always better. High octane actually slows the burn so vehicles with higher compression engines won't spark knock. Putting higher octane in a vehicle that does not need it can worsen gas milage. Plus it costs more.

Use whatever octane your owners manual calls for.

I have a Super Chip and I had it set on the economy 87 octane setting for a while. I recently went to the High Performance setting and my MPG's went up a bit. I am now averaging 14 MPG in mixed city highway driving, prior to the change I was getting about 12.5. So I think that it only cost a little bit more to use high test as apposed to 87.

People do run a higher octane for better mileage and more power. Try to stay away from ethanol blends if you can.

I think giving people the blanket statement that higher octane = better milage and better performance is misleading. You should run whatever octane your engine is designed for. Running higher octane in an engine that is not designed for it is a waste of money. There are no benefits. Now as one poster said, his vehicle was modded with a chip, then yes, maybe this would be beneficial.

Read this article and maybe it will explain better. Keep in mind the gas companies would love for you to believe the marketing hype that goes along with higher octane.

I can find articles all day with some saying ethanol is the best thig for your ride while other articles will say it is the worst. Both will provide "factual" data. So who do you believe?

Same thing with octane levels. If you want to know this difference and see if a higher octane will really benefit you then all you can do is do one tank in 87 and the other in 93 and see for yourself if you have any more power or better mileage.
