Default newb with a couple ?

hello all , new to this site. i just bought a 2002 quad cab 1500 and the guy i bought it from said it was chipped for gas mileage and was wondering what exactly that means and if i should be concerned about what octane to use?

also the truck has 285 size tires on it and was wondering if there is any way to adjust the spedo accordingly?

Welcome.

Chipped for MPG means it originally sucked on MPG maybe worse than what it does now. So it was reprogrammed with a chip or tuner to get better MPGs.

As for what octane, your can run 87 but obviously higher is better and will result in better mileage and performance. Try to stay away from ethanol if you can.

As for the tire size, you will need a tuner like Superchips to tune the truck and adjust the speedo for the tires. Or go back with original size tires

why would you need to recalibrate for wider tires?

wider tires you would not but taller or shorter you would.

While the OP did say what width they were, he did not say the height but that is the only thing that could throw it off

For an 02 you can get the SC model 3815. No need for you to get the 3865. You can buy them new at many sites including ebay. But you can get them used on CL and ebay and even here on our boards for around 175-225.

If it is used you just have to make sure it is unlocked so it can be used on your truck.

Here is one for sale although it is the 3865

And here is one that is sold but shows it being UNLOCKED which again is what you must have

I would get ahold of the guy you bought the truck from and ask if he still had the unit he used to recalibrate the truck with. If he does you might be bale to get a good deal on it.

The difference between the 3815 and 3865 is only the trans shifts option but you cannot get that option with an 04. Its only for 05+
