well I finally changed it, since this was my question I felt I owed you guys a reply
I am in no way any type of weekend mechanic, I was pretty intimidated especially scared about over torquing the pan bolts and snapping one off, I ended up using 13 quarts of fluid total and that was even wasting about 2-3 IMHO, I'm pretty cheap and it was killing me watching that red fluid run out of the tube...lol
the biggest issue I had was pulling the little seal, it started to rip apart, I didn't know it was rubber over a metal ring, I read to be a little careful cause the AL is soft, but I had to pry it out with a home made screwdriver with a notch cut out of the center.....
here is a close up of the seal, by the way, the guys at NAPA told me there are 2 different Transmissions for 3 rd gen trucks, mine took the long flat pan and the spin on filter, and yes, its a WIX filter now at NAPA, the other model trans takes a slightly smaller square type filter and no other additional spin on filter
I used Castrol ATF + 4 cause that was the only cheaper option over house fluids, Fluids ran about $ 80 +/- and the filters were $ 37, my filters came with a gasket, but I still used a little RTV between the pan and the gasket
thanks to all those that provided tips and guidance, especially dirtytdog for the shortcuts......I noticed I only got 5 +/- qts out the first time and about 2 left over in the pan, the fluid stopped flowing almost all together and it scared me to keep it running DRY....dropped the pan and got another 2 out , refilled with 7 qts and got about 5-6 out the second time and put 7 more qts in and the fluid was almost all red on the 3 rd cycle so I stopped, I was pretty close cause I didn't have to add any and fluid level is correct on the dip stick.
