Default tranny flush?

Has anyone actually tried to change their transmission fluid in their driveway? I can only assume you can drain the pan and replace the fluid in the valve body. However that leaves quite a few quarts unchanged in the torque converter. Is a tranny flush done only by a transmission specialist. Just thinking outloud. If the transmission,is just a pump, can't you run the motor in nuetral and flush the tranny yourself.

I disconnected the return line and ran the truck in nuetral until the fluid sputtered(into a bucket). Then I removed the pan, not as messy as a normal pan drop because at this point there is hardly any fluid in the pan. Then I cleaned up the pan/magnet rtv'd and closed it up. Added 7 quarts and ran it into the bucket again until it looked like the new fluid was coming out of the return line. Reconnected the line and topped off to the full mark. I think I used 17-18 quarts but I may have lost a little of the new stuff into the bucket. And yes I did it in my driveway while nursing some cold beverages. I did lay out some painters plastic under the truck but really didn't spill much fluid at all.

I followed this proceedure after someone else had recommended it on here, I believe it was Dirtydog.

I was kind of wondering the same thing, the disconnecting the return line process just seems like it would annoy me. Wouldn't dropping the pan and replacing the required amount, driving around a bit, then dropping it again and replace the fluid again essentially do the same thing?

I did mine at the house and just as said before, i changed my pan and filters and filled it back up. Then took loose the trans line before it goes into the cooler and ran it into a bucket and started the truck to let it pump out old fluid. Did that for a few secs and stopped the truck and refilled.

Over and over, again and again until i went through all 17 qrts I had bought.
