Question whining sound

Hey all here is my problem. I have a 2002 1500 with 5.9 and 4x4. Under light exceleration when the speedo gets to about 40km/hr you can start to here a whining noise coming from the front somewhere. As the speed increases the noise gets louder but if I take my foot off the gas it goes away. I tryed spraying WD-40 on the tensioner etc.. under the hood last night hoping that the little bit of lube would quiet one of the accessories down and I could pinpoint the noise but it didn't. Does anyone have any thoughts to this.

thanks,
Jake

Yep, change your diff fluids and see if that doesn't solve the issue. Most guys never even think to change the diff fluids, but they are due every 30kmi or in your case 48,000km

Hi im new here, and I think Im having a similar problem. Awhile ago, outta nowhere, i started to hear a chirping, kinda metal clanging noise from my frt drivers tire area. I took it to Tire World and they said I need to rebuild my Frt Drive shaft RR Joint. The specs are 2002 Dodge Dakota SLT V8 5.9L . Does anyone have any suggestions? I just want to double check that this is the actual problem, and if I should check other possible causes before taking this route. Is there a cheaper way to do it? Tire World wants to charge me nearly $500 just for the rebuild . They said they need to rebuild it to make it a UJoint? Please help, Im obviously clueless =( Id seriously appreciate it so much thanks

Nope I don't think it's the same issue, his "whine" would appear to be an issue more related to the ring and pinion. While yours coming from one specific tire area would be more indicative of a different issue. A lot of steering/suspension components over there that could make noise on you, but I'd start by lifting the vehicle up and checking for play. Also VERY possible a hub issue.

BTW, we have a section specifically for your 2nd Gen Dakota and it's issues:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-dakota-67/

although you are perfectly welcome to post in any section on the forum...

Thanks so much for your help, I should have someone check out the 'hub' you say,
do you have any other suggestions also? When Tire World said i needed to "rebuild the Front Drive Shaft Rear joint " does that makes sense for this issue?

Christina
PS thank you again =)

i think he may be the victim of carrier bearing or pinion bearing failure
