Default Rack & Pinion problems & questions

I am getting a pretty loud popping when im turning the wheel at a stop or at low speeds (15 mph and slower usually) and it's been going on for a little while now.. I had this issue before and my upper control arms weren't tight enough after an alignment and that fixed the issue. I tried this again, tightened them up and still popping, went back through and re-torqued the ball joints. Still popping. I had my dad turn the wheel while i was laying under it and the noise is coming from the rack and pinion unit. I'm just wondering if this isn't replaced right away.. when it finally goes will I lose all steering?
I put a 6" lift and 35"s on the truck about a month back and have had nothing but problems with the truck ever since. I'm leaving for basic training for the Army November 9 and don't really wanna have to mess with anything until I'm back if possible but at the same time I can't afford to wrap the thing around a tree at 60 MPH. At this rate the truck will be for sale soon due to all the problems I've been having, 79K miles is wayy too soon to be having one thing after another fall apart IMO...

Any help appreciated guys!
