Thumbs down Confused About Y Pipes and Cat. Converters

My front right cat. converter is rattling, so I need to replace it. A. Can just the single cat. be replaced or do I have to change the entire y pipe? The auto parts store says I have to change the enitre y pipe.

Also, I live in NH, but I bought the truck in Maine and the emission sticker on the hood says California and not 49 Federal or whatever it should say. So what do I do now??? I cant find any California compliant y pipes or cats and I was considering the Magnflow setup, but they are both for the 49 State legal crap. Heres a link?

See my dilema?

Bottom line is, my truck is do for inspection and we have emissions testing here in NH, so I need to get it fixed asap.

Thanks in advance.

Well, what do they do for emissions in your state? Do they hook everything up and just run the OBDII port test? or do they do a full visual inspection as well? I assume that since you have a Cali sticker on your truck its gonna be a full blown test/inspection and will require everything to have a CARB stamp on them. MAy want to do a search for CARB certified catalitic converters.

For the Y-pipe, they will have to remove it from the down pipe of the log manifolds and cut the cat out as it is welded in the Y and then re-weld the new cat back in place.

Here is a quick pic of the stock 04-08 exhaust setup, should give you an idea as to what they would have to do to replace one.

Also as long as the cat right now is not throwing a code you should be fine for emissions I would think as it is still working enough to not throw a CEL. Hope that helps a little

Yeah, thats what mine looks like. They hook up the obd2 and do a visual. How come the magnoflow kit doesnt have the front two converters on it? Neither did the one at the part store. Will that kit still work for mine or???

I do have a CEL on because of a bad right rear 02 sensor. I bought a new one today but havent put it in yet. I hate the rattling noise. So annoying.

Thanks for the reply and pics.

The magnaflow one you linked to is for an 03', most of the 03's only have one cat while the later 03's 04's-current have 2. Thats why they are different

If its the stock exhaust, then your 03' was one of the ones built later on in the year closer to 04'. The setup you are describing is what every 3rd gen ram from 04-8 has, 2 cats coming off each side of the Y and then a resonator right after the Y followed by the muffler and then another resonator near the tailpipe.

The kit, no.

These Magnaflow cats are CARB (Cali) rated though so might want to check with magnaflow tomorrow or email them and ask as these are all universal replacements

Forgot to ask, what engine do you have?
